Why We Never Use Themeforest Themes

Scott Hartley

Often times we get asked what we use to make your WordPress site and if its a prebuilt theme or what our development process is like. I would like to take the time to address how we build our themes, what you're getting when you get your site built with us as opposed to the competition. But I first want to address a question you might not know and that is "What is wrong with Themeforest themes".

I want to preface this by saying that while not all Themeforest themes are bad. Most of them are ill-equipped to suit your needs and instead try to satisfy everyone by cramming as many features in as possible to boost sales. I want to further address the obvious point in regards to the high ratings many of the products on Themeforest have high ratings because the products at their core deliver what they show you. They generate a near-perfect replica of their demo layouts with the click of a button.

Less Obvious Issues

Part of the problem with Themeforest themes is they are very inflexible in general. You will run into strange limitations quite often where you might want to just add a relatively small addition such as there is a team section and you want to link them to member profiles but using pre-made sections for Elementor or WPBakery that these themes are often bundled with simply don't allow such functionality. This leads to a common situation I have seen far too often where either you or the company you contracted to build your website needs to make a cheap shortcut which can involve using javascript in a very unsustainable way, or some other workaround where that theme has been modified in a way you can no longer update it. In short, unless you want your website to look exactly like a demo you're often going to spend significant time reworking large pieces of the theme to force it into the design you want.

Large Number of Plugins

I could write another article about why just plugin count is not an issue but the issue with many ThemeForest themes is core pieces of their functionality often piggyback off other plugins. This includes things like Elementor Addons that are custom-made by the theme developer who is either not reliable at updating said plugin or has abandoned the template altogether. This becomes a major issue because you get locked out of updating your website and those who monitor their websites for security issues know that there are many vulnerabilities from these types of off-shoot Elementor addon plugins.
